A child’s first time roller skating can be an intimidating one! It takes a lot of courage to get out on the rink and get rolling. Here are just a few of the benefits of rollerskating for kids:

It’s that time of year to go back to school in East Texas. We know that there will be plenty of homework to be done and many tests along the way but we figured there is no better time than to take a minute to refresh everyone on the history of Rollerskating. Don’t worry, there’s no test at the end!

A few quick facts:

• It’s documented that Rollerskating was invented by a Belgium man named Joseph Merlin in the 1760’s. He created them for a performance at a masquerade where he intended to skate while playing the violin.
• In the 1860’s, James Plimpton of the United States invented a roller skate that had four wheels, two in the front and two in the back. This was the start of a roller skating revolution as he also established the first roller skating rink in New York City. It was there that he taught groups how to skate and even established the first known roller skating association known as The New York Roller Skating Association. 
• Roller skating grew in popularity in during the Great Depression as it was an inexpensive activity.
• Roller skating had massive surges in popularity during the 1970’s at the roller discos and the 1990’s when new inline skates were reintroduced.

It’s holiday week in East Texas, and if you don’t have your Friday planned out just yet, let us go over the different options that you have.

First and foremost, Skate Ranch and Skate-O-Rama will be open. Considering the weather forecast is predicting thunderstorms, moving your celebration plans indoors might be a great idea. Our roller rinks will be open normal business hours, from 1:00 p.m. with our afternoon skate to closing at 10:00 p.m. after our night skate wraps up. Choosing to spend your afternoon roller skating is a brilliant idea because you can print one of our summer coupons for FREE admission during our sessions from 1 to 4 and 5 to 7. There is no limit to the number of coupons that you can print off and each one is good for four people. So, if you have family and other out of town guests that you want to entertain, our East Texas roller rinks are the perfect choice.

For those leaving our roller rinks after our evening skate session and looking for some fireworks, East Texas has a couple of great options.

In Lufkin, the city’s annual Independence Day Celebration will once again be at Ellen Trout park. The fireworks begin at 9:15, but the festivities start at 3:00 p.m.

As for our Nacogdoches residents, Freedom Fest will be right just South of the town square in Festival Park. Fireworks begin 30 minutes after dark, but the event begins at 5:00 p.m.

When it comes to the safety of your child, we understand that there is no such thing as too many precautions, and when you are leaving your kids in the care of someone else, it can be a very unsettling experience. For this reason, we want to go over a few of our safety protocols to help reinforce the concept that your child is in great hands when you drop him/her off for a night of roller skating at Skate Ranch.

Every Friday and Saturday night, we employ a security officer who patrols our facility until the last person leaves. These officers join us from all of the local agencies such as D.P.S. and Diboll P.D., for example.

We advise the children they can no leave the facility unattended, and we ensure that their parents are waiting in the parking lot before they can exit. At the end of the evening, when they are walking to the car, our security officer is outside overseeing to ensure a safe passage.

As far as inside our facility, we take all of the necessary measures to prevent injuries. Of course falls are a part of roller skating, and they can result in a couple of bruises. Except for an occasional couple skate upon request, but we do not allow skaters to hold hands to avoid a domino-effect when it comes to falls. We also have a strict, no Public Display of Affection, policy. Our guests come to our facility to have a great time roller skating, and nothing more.

Since it is one of those off-the-wall holidays you may not know about, we feel it is our duty to bring recognition to National Bomb Pop Day. What is a bomb pop you ask? It’s the red, white and blue Popsicle that is kind of shaped like a rocket ship, and these delicious, cold treats are the theme of our next late skate.

June 27th is National Bomb Pop Day and we are celebrating with a spectacular roller skating party at Skate Ranch. The festivities begin at 7 p.m. and continue through to midnight. Since the Popsicle is the star of the evening, you can believe we will have them on hand, and they’ll be free for the first 25 skaters. Is there a better way to cool down on a hot summer night than by enjoying a tasty Popsicle? We didn’t think so either!

As with any late skate, we’ll be having fantastic games, prizes and fun for the whole family. So, join us on Friday, June 27, 2014 at our Lufkin roller rink. Admission is only $12.

Whether you are new to roller skating or looking to improve your skills and become more comfortable on wheels, Skate Ranch is where you need to be this summer. Beginning June 21st, we will be offering 6 weeks of skate lessons, held on Saturdays through the summer.

These lessons are open to all ages, from toddlers to teenagers and even their parents. We have Skate Mate trainers available for the little ones to use in the learning process, if needed. These lessons are only $10 each or you can pre-pay all six weeks for only $50. This admission price includes the lessons, skate rentals and admission to the Saturday afternoon public skate session.

School is out and summer break is here. This is, of course, the time for vacations, but how are you going to spend your days when you are aren’t out of town? Simple – spend them roller skating with us at one of our East Texas roller rinks. Why, you ask? Well, let us give you 10 great reasons to come see us this summer.

1. Two words – air conditioning!! These Texas summers are excruciatingly hot, but it is nice and cool inside our roller rinks.

We’ll be uploading new coupons every month, so make sure you are using the right one for your visit, but there is no limit to how many you can use. Print off a bundle and bring your friends!
4. Wayyy Back Wednesday. Our $1 nights have moved from Tuesdays to Wednesdays this summer. So, join us on Wednesday nights from 6 to 8 p.m for $1 admission, $1 drinks, $1 hot dogs and $1 pizza slices!
5. Fantastic roller skating parties! We love hosting special late skates and other events at Skate Ranch, so be sure to check our Facebook page and website for dates and themes.
6. Skate Lessons! Skate Ranch is offering a six weeks of skate lessons through the summer, making it your chance to learn how to skate or to improve and become more confident.
7. Christian Skate Nights – On the fourth Sunday of every month, we host a special Christian skate night. It is the perfect opportunity for youth group field trips.
8. Great snacks – our concession stand has a variety of delicious snacks and beverages to keep you feeling great.
9. Roller skating is a cardiovascular exercise with the same benefits of jogging, but it is low impact and does not hurt your joints. So, you’ll be burning a significant amount of calories just by roller skating away the afternoon.
